SuMaSy – The digital solution for evaluations in continuing medical education at ETH Zurich for over 10 years
The Consumer Behavior group at ETH Zurich has been conducting surveys on the quality of continuing education among chief physicians and assistant physicians in Switzerland for more than ten years using the SuMaSy web application.
Designed from the outset as a long-term solution, SuMaSy has become a stable, database-supported application that is continuously developed and operated.
The reports are created automatically on the basis of the imported Excel files and can be viewed directly via the application or downloaded for printing if required.
The path to a digital survey
The impetus for the development of SuMaSy came from ETH Zurich. The aim was to create the reporting of the survey on continuing medical education in Germany digitally. Following the successful implementation, it was decided to use SuMaSy for surveys in Switzerland and to adapt it to the specific needs of the company.
When the process can no longer grow with
With SuMaSy, surveys and reporting are combined in one integrated system for the first time.
What used to be a time-consuming, manually controlled process now works more efficiently and independently. The head physicians enter their data themselves in the spring and can access the finished report directly in the winter.

The core problems at a glance:
- Time-consuming adjustments and tests before each survey

- Technically not very scalable – especially with large numbers of participants
The expectations of the new solution were correspondingly high. We were looking for a robust, customized application that was precisely tailored to the specific requirements of the medical training evaluation project and, above all, radically simplified the entire process.

Instead of relying on a standard solution, the project team decided on a customized approach together with Panter. The aim was to develop an application that would meet the high demands.
Three modules, one goal: efficiency
- Web platform:
The central access point for users to enter, manage and view continuing education data. - Reporting engine:
Here, manually prepared data can be uploaded, aggregated and made available in user-friendly reports. - Management interface:
Administrators can use this backend module to control the platform and adjust system-relevant parameters.
New infrastructure with a fresh look
In 2024, SuMaSy not only received functional updates, but also a comprehensive technical and design refresh:
- Cloud migration: The entire application was migrated from an outdated Windows XP-based infrastructure to a scalable cloud environment. This increases the availability, security and future viability of the platform.
- Design relaunch: The web interface has been visually modernized. New colors, revised typography and a clearer layout ensure a contemporary user experience.
- Functional optimizations: Existing functions have been selectively improved. At the same time, they have been tidied up.
- SuMaSy has been proving for over 10 years that sustainable digital solutions are possible.
- Processes run much faster. They are also more clearly structured. This leads to a significant increase in efficiency.
- Over the years, the system has proven to be very practical and has become an integral part of everyday working life.
- The high level of acceptance among all users also speaks for itself. Conclusion: SuMaSy continues to function reliably and efficiently more than a decade after its launch.
